In-Year Admissions and the Waiting List Explained
An appeal isn't the only route that keeps working after a refusal. Here's what the waiting list and in-year admissions actually mean, and how they differ from appealing again.

The waiting list
You can normally stay on the waiting list for your preferred school for the rest of the admission round, and a place can still become available if another family’s circumstances change — for instance if an offered family withdraws or moves away. Being on the waiting list doesn’t affect your right to appeal, and appealing doesn’t remove you from the waiting list — the two run alongside each other, not instead of one another.
In-year admissions
Separately from the main admission round, you can apply for a place at any point during the school year if one later becomes available — this is known as an in-year application, and it’s a genuinely separate process from both the original application and any appeal. If your family’s circumstances mean a place could become suitable at a different point in the year, an in-year application is worth keeping in mind alongside the waiting list and appeal routes.
How these relate to an unsuccessful appeal
If your appeal is refused, there’s no further appeal on the merits of the same case to a higher panel simply because you disagree with the outcome — see our full guide to what happens after a decision for what that does and doesn’t mean. The waiting list and in-year admissions are the two routes that keep working in the background afterwards, without requiring a fresh hearing.
Quick FAQ
Do I lose my place on the waiting list if my appeal is refused?
No — the waiting list and the appeal are separate. A refused appeal doesn’t remove you from the waiting list for that school.
Can I apply in-year for a school I was already refused?
Yes — an in-year application is a genuinely separate process from your original application and appeal, so a previous refusal doesn’t block a later in-year application if a place becomes available.
